Sensory integration rooms or sensory stimuli are used as a therapeutic solution for relaxation and stimulation for some students with disabilities. These rooms aim to calm students with behavioral disorders and stimulate their senses. In these rooms, students find a quiet and safe place to calm their panic attacks, which can sometimes be very dangerous.
Below are some important things to keep in mind when creating sensory rooms
Not be used for any other purposes
-
Not to use these rooms for student punishment or detention for misbehavior
-
Positively design the room to support the student and not discipline him
-
Always put these rooms under adult supervision, especially while students are there
-
The room should have an appropriate temperature and equipped with simple and warm lighting fixtures
-
All students must be introduced to this room in order to avoid the spread of rumors about a “mysterious” or “scary room”
-
Never lock the room from the inside or outside, especially while students are there
-
These rooms are designed to be used for a short period of time (10-20 mins at most) and according to each student’s age and needs
-
The rooms include a lot of delicate materials and tools that must be cleaned regularly, including the furniture and everything inside
