The need for extended support services in the U.S. emerged with the introduction of several policies, such as the learning plan, and the increased awareness of the importance of all students with disabilities having access to academic and rehabilitative support services throughout the academic year in a way that matches their abilities. The services have been added to the Individuals with Disabilities Support Act (IDEA, 2004) as an essential part of the special education services that all students have a right to.
